KAZAN 1000 Special Issue

Dear Colleagues,

In honor of 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Kazan, Journal of Modern Turkish Studies is soliciting your contribution for a special issue on Kazan and related Idil-Ural studies, to be published in September 2005.

The framework of the issue will rest on six considerations, namely:

  • RELATIONS between Russian and Turk-Tatar nations covering all chronological periods from the medieval to the present, especially in Idil-Ural region.
  • ENCOUNTERS, RESPONSES AND REPRESENTATIONS in czarist and imperial Russia between central and peripherical Russian authorities and non-Russian and non-Orthodox subjects, especially in Idil-Ural region.
  • IMPACTS of Idil-Ural Turk-Tatar people on Russian people and Fin-Ugor peoples living in Idil-Ural region or vice versa (from political, social and cultural, economical aspects to linguistic and literary aspects including all chronological periods)
  • INTELLECTUAL LIFE in Idil-Ural region, Muslim Tatar innovation, jadidist movement in Russian empire and contributions of Turk-Tatar intelligentsia to modern Islamic thought (from 19th century to early years of 20th century)
  • POLITICAL DISCOURSE of Turk Tatar intelligentsia in pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet eras.
  • DIASPORA, Idil-Ural communities in Turkey and the rest places, and their socio-cultural situations.

There are no thematic preferences and the editors look forward to submit any topic you feel would fit into the general framework of the issue.

Queries regarding potential submissions and all other inquiries should be addressed to the guest editor, Abdullah Gündogdu, abdullahgundogdu@yahoo.com .
