Analyzing the Translation of Modal Verbs and Adverbs by Meaning and Position

ÖZET
Bu çalışmada zorunluluk, kabiliyet, olasılık bildiren seçili kiplik fiillerinin/belirteçlerinin İzmir’deki bir özel üniversitedeki çeviri öğrencileri (N=30) tarafından nasıl çevirildiği seçili bir metnin İngilizceden Türkçeye çevirisi yoluyla incelenmiştir. Öncelikle anlam ve yer temelinde doğru, yanlış kullanım ve metinden çıkarma şeklinde ilgili çeviriler Hata Analizi tekniğiyle kategorize edilmiştir. Tek yönlü ANOVA testi öğrencilerin kiplik fiillerini metinden atma eğiliminde olduğunu, doğru çeviri yapma oranının ise metinden atma oranından anlamlı bir farklılık göstermediğini ortaya koymuştur. Buna etki eden nedenler arasında kipliğin çokanlamlı yapısının, Türkçe ve İngilizce arasındaki sözdizimsel farklılıkların, dil öğrenme sürecinde kipliğe daha az maruz kalmanın ve öğrencilerin çeviri stratejilerinin etkili olabileceği düşünülmüştür. İkinci olarak, aynı işlem kiplik belirteçlerine uygulandığında, katılımcıların kiplik fiillerinin kiplik belirteçlerine kıyasla daha çok zorlandığı saptanmıştır. Bu sonuçların dilbilim, dil öğretimi ve çeviri öğretiminde yansımalarının olabileceği değerlendirilmektedir.

ABSTRACT
This study aims to address the research gap regarding the translation by trainee translators of modal verbs expressing necessity, ability and possibility and of modal adverbs by meaning and position. First, an Error Analysis was conducted on the translation of modal verbs in the homework assignments of the participants (N=30) at a private university in Izmir. The translations of modal verbs from English into Turkish were categorized as correct use, misuse and omissions based on the meaning and position. A One-way ANOVA test showed that the participants were more prone to omitting modal verbs in their translations, while the number of their correct translations did not differ significantly from that of the omissions. The polysemous nature of modality, the syntactic differences between Turkish and English, the less exposure to modality during the educational process and students’ translational strategies may account for the results in the study. Second, when the error analysis was conducted for modal adverbs in the same text, it was seen that the participants had more difficulties in translating modal verbs than adverbs. These results may have implications for linguistics, teaching and translation didactics.
