ABSTRACT

Gender is an under-researched issue in interpreting when compared to translation. Furthermore, in interpreting studies, little research was conducted about female interpreters, though they account for most interpreting positions. There is even a social perception that a profession loses prestige as more women become involved. Former studies reinforce the view that female interpreters believe they have a less prestigious stance in the interpreting field. To explore the underlying reasons for this seemingly less prestigious position felt by female interpreters,  the research question of this study is as follows:  What are the gender-related problems leading to the less prestigious position female interpreters have thought in the interpreting arena? The study aims to grow an awareness of the social constraints female interpreters encounter in their business life and thus reform the socio-psychological mindset of female interpreters. The gender-related problems identified in this study are the Glass Ceiling effect,Gender-based arguments against women interpreters serving at top positions by patriarchal cultures, and Hegemonic Masculinity, which are not meant to be exhaustive.

KEY WORDS
gender, gender-related problems, female interpreters
